The Vaudeville Circuit was a popular variety show style of entertainment popular from the 1880's through the 1930's. This program is from the Denver Orpheum Theatre, a popular stop for Vaudeville Acts. The cover of this program features a rendering of figures from classical Greek tragedy whose origins have been traced to exuberant celebrations held in honor of the androgynous Greek God Dionysus. The figure shown in the illustration on the program with her (or his) feminine facial features and masculine body is true to the nature of traditional ancient Greek performance in which all actors were men who played the roles of both men and women on stage.
