Androgyny Image

Sue Mundy was a fictitious character created by a newspaper reporter from the Louisville Courier Journal in 1864 named George Prentice to frustrate the invading Union commander Stephen G. Burbridge. According to stories published by Prentice, Mundy (really Marcellus Jerome Clarke - shown in the photo at left) was a slight woman who was robbing, stealing and murdering Union soldiers at will in the face of martial law declared by President Lincoln. While it turned out that this Confederate vigilante was actually a man, it's not hard to see why Prentice created a female character based on him and his exploits. His smooth, slight features could easily be mistaken for those of a woman.
