Marilyn Manson is perhaps the most intentionally self-styled androgyne in contyemporary pop-culture, taking his cues from several other punk and glam musicians such as Iggy Pop, T. Rex and David Bowie in conjunction with various facets of commercialism, drugs and counter culture. The image at left is from a picture-disk single of the song "The Dope Show" from the band's 1998 LP Mechanical Animals.

Manson (originally born Brian Warner) appears in various androgynous-alien personae in performing music which seeks to point to and question the validity and impact of various cultural institutions, especially those encountered by youth. In deciding to take on the "veneer" of androgyny in costume and makeup, Manson seeks to question and have others question their own sexual identities.
